What Is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram (pronounced "ANY-a-gram") is a personality framework that describes nine fundamental personality types, each with its own core motivations, fears, and patterns of behavior.
Unlike many personality assessments that focus on what you do, the Enneagram focuses on why you do it — your core motivations, unconscious drives, and deepest fears.
The Nine Types at a Glance
| Type | Name | Core Motivation | |------|------|------------------| | 1 | The Reformer | To be good and right | | 2 | The Helper | To be loved and needed | | 3 | The Achiever | To be successful and admired | | 4 | The Individualist | To be unique and authentic | | 5 | The Investigator | To be competent and knowledgeable | | 6 | The Loyalist | To be secure and supported | | 7 | The Enthusiast | To be happy and fulfilled | | 8 | The Challenger | To be strong and in control | | 9 | The Peacemaker | To be at peace and harmonious |
How It Works
The Enneagram isn't just nine boxes. It's a dynamic system with several layers:
- Wings: The two types adjacent to your core type that influence your personality
- Growth and Stress Lines: Each type takes on characteristics of other types when healthy (growth) or stressed
- Instinctual Variants: Three biological drives (self-preservation, social, one-to-one) that filter how your type expresses itself
- Levels of Health: Each type can be expressed in healthy, average, or unhealthy ways
Why It Matters
The Enneagram matters because self-knowledge is the foundation of growth. When you understand your automatic patterns, you gain the power to choose differently.
It's not about putting yourself in a box — it's about seeing the box you're already in so you can step out of it.
Getting Started
The best way to begin is to read about each type and notice which core motivations and fears resonate most deeply. Our Discovery Quiz can give you a starting point, but the real work happens through reflection and honest self-examination.
Remember: the Enneagram is a tool for growth, not a label. Use it wisely.
